Lets get thinking “out of the box” by putting our artworks into one! This workshop will explore ways of creating focal pieces to ultimately use as jewelry objects. Working all morning in a strict 2-by-2-inch format, you’ll be free to use any combination of paints, paper, ephemera, pencils and pastels, resin, fiber, stitchery, weaving, beadwork, metal and/or found objects that you desire to bring with you and use. Once you’ve completed the “morning work,” you’ll choose a favorite piece to “box” in the afternoon to create your wearable presentation frame fabricated from copper and joined without the use of a torch.

Free play within the structure is the aim of this class, and I will show you lots of ways to use your favorite media to ultimately create jewelry art, but for the game to work, it is imperative that everyone brings their enthusiasm, an open mind, PLUS whatever art materials they like to use and are comfortable using – provided they will be compatible with the small format we will be working in.

Join artist Micah Goguen for this course showcasing the magic of glass! It may look complicated from the photo but this mixed media process starts simply by collaging a black and white image of your choice to a panel. We will then stain the panel to get a little more practical application with color mixing using just a couple of colors. We will end the whole process by sealing the work with Glass Bead Gel and creating that prismatic look that captures the color underneath.
All materials are provided for this course and no previous experience is necessary. This course is great for the guest that wants to learn more about color, make a satisfying project and learn about a new product. Nature lovers, come into the forest and forage some one of a kind mushrooms with me! Using an air-dry paper clay, we will sculpt small mushroom ornaments of various varieties, such as Morels, Amanitas, and Violet Cort. Make some to keep and some to share. We will form the different varieties of mushrooms and install a wire loop for hanging. Once dry, you are free to paint as desired and seal with a clear coat. Your finished ornaments will be lightweight and surprisingly sturdy.

Within the Layers is a two-day class focused on surface design and mixed media layering. Our time will be spent learning and using techniques related to collaging with paper and fabric, inking, painting, stamping, mark making, hand stitching, and book binding. We begin by building our surfaces with layers of collage, paint, and ink. Next step will be to add our own unique touch with mark making and stitching. In the end, this all comes together as we bind our papers into small booklets that hold and tell our stories. It will be a day packed with creativity, inspiration, and community. You will leave with 1 or more booklets that express your personal artist voice within the layers.
My demo books will be sized at approximately 3.75 x 4.5 inches but yours can be any dimensions of your choosing. Consider your preferred size in advance as you collect your supplies for the workshop. Also please note that many of these supplies can be purchased at the shop on class day.

In this creative and extensive workshop We will explore some of the cherished laces of the world and their origins.
Some of these laces date back to the early 17th century and before.
On the first day of class we will construct a “No Sew” Journal with a mixed lace cover, plus a spine which allows pages to be inserted and removed. If you would choose to create a more rustic antiqued journal we will cover ways to add this effect.
On the second day we will work on the inside contents of your journal.We will be filling it with hand made papers that we will prep and embellish. Pockets and pullouts will be made to hold photographs and memories. Many embellishments will be added for the perfect touches.
Each student will leave with a finished 5” X 8” Journal with a 2” thick spine.

For those looking for a little deeper dive into linocut block printing. We will have more time for a more complex image of your choice. We will use a little larger block than in the intro class. We will cover image transfer methods, positive and negative space, safety while carving, and instill confidence in carving. You can bring your own image or choose from images available from the instructor. Then we will print on a variety of papers and cardstocks. You will leave with several prints, cards, and the inspiration to continue on your own. All skill levels are welcome. Warning: Linocut carving can become addictive.

This full day class will take you through the construction of a 48” Lariat that can go over your head twice. You will have a choice of chain and plastic color as we decorate a group of shrink plastic components that will be shrunk and assembled using several different colorants. We will then heat-shrink and mold with Julie Haymaker’s wonderful silicon molds. Inspired by a creative exploration of floral shapes and spacing, these earrings also reflect a deep appreciation for the subtle nuances that define elegance in design. I look forward to sharing this with you. Students will learn to design and execute this Lariat using shrink plastic, molds and several different colorants.

The Concho: flat or domed, intricately decorated, round or oval metal shallow forms traditionally created by indigenous silversmiths of the desert Southwest as decorative elements for leatherwork and clothing. Ubiquitous, right? So let’s shake things up, rethink a historical classic, and remix a popular and enduring metal form in a modern, urban, alternative way.

Derived from the Spanish word for "seashell," conchos are created using a basic metals technique called shallow or shell forming. Together, we’ll explore the use of various jewelry making tools and materials as the basis for creating a couple of interesting riffs on simple bowl-like forms we have created from square, round or oval base shapes. Explore different attachment systems and learn several kinds of joining unlike materials via rivets, tabs, slots and stitch. Finally, you’ll be able to securely mount finished conchos to different substrates like fiber, leather and vinyl, because you’ll want to wear those works of art!
Skill level: Advanced beginner and up
A physical note: We will hammer on metal. It can be loud. You should be able to stand for a short time to create your bowl-like base forms, be able to tolerate some noise, and be able to use a hammer like you mean it for short 3 to 5 minute bursts of time.

In this jam-packed, one-day workshop, we will be using a zillion (I counted) different techniques to create an artist book. We will start by making a handbound book with a no-sew binding. From there we will move on to create painted backgrounds for our book pages. We will then create collages to serve as the focal points for our pages. As a final touch, our covers will be embellished to add dimension and detail. Because of the wide range of techniques included and the varied speed at which artists work, you may or may not leave the workshop with every page complete.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Matching front and back commercial book covers, separated from the spine and book block. Please choose covers that you like as we will only be adding small embellishments to our covers within the class. My sample measures 6 x 9 inches and yours should be that size or smaller.

In this workshop students will be guided in creating their own Pocket Satchel.
What is a Pocket Satchel? It is a necklace or over the shoulder pouch made from muslin as a base and then creatively embellished with all things fiber. This class is creativity with cloth, lace, trims, buttons, and whatever else you choose to add. Students will be taught different techniques to use in attaching their fibers and fabrics. There will be some slow stitching in embellishing the satchel. Everything is provided and there will be plenty of colors and textures to choose from. You are also welcome to bring anything extra that you might want to add. Finished satchels will be of your own design, meaning they can vary from pastel shabby chic, to rustic weathered and aged appearing. All tools will be provided for you to use in your creation.

Create a miniature work of wearable art that’s all boxed up in a container made from recycled cookie tin and protected under vintage glass. Bring any completed “Inchie” – a small, square artwork that measures one-inch square – and learn how to fabricate a small jewelry piece that makes a big, bold statement using clever construction techniques like strategic drilling, wire bending, and metal folds or tabs.
Further details:
Your Inchie must be a smudge-proof, flat artwork created with paint, pencil, ink, collage or sealed pastel on paper or card stock. This is a great opportunity to make use of that beautiful, but too-small collage fodder and bits or remnants that are just too nice to throw away! Stitched, woven or other fibers and/or found materials are OK too – as long as the substrate or backing fabric is no thicker than 1/8-inch in order to securely fit under the glass. Larger artworks will need to be trimmed to this size, so choose thoughtfully! The final format for your artwork will be either a fibula pin or a pendant, and you’ll have the option of further embellishment as time permits.

So you bought a Dremel Tool, with all those crazy attachments and bits, and the unbridled versatility of this amazing device has left you more than a little bit confused, or even intimidated. Fear not my friends, for this course will turn a Dremel Novice into a Dremel Master. I will explain all the basic workings of the tool, chucks, collets, and how to change the bits, and replace the brushes. We'll go over what many of the different tips and bits can do, such as drilling, cutting, buffing, sanding, grinding, polishing, carving, engraving, and a few of the specialty bits and attachments like tools that can drill and cut glass, porcelain or stone (diamond bit/cut-off wheel required). Students will not only get a demonstration of these tools and several of their myriad uses on all kinds of materials, but should bring along a variety of supplies to practice on, as there will plenty of quality hands-on time for you and your new tool. We will also cover using a Dremel drill press and basic safety for rotary tools.

My definition of collage is taking individual elements that were not meant to be together and joining them into a cohesive whole that tells a story. In this one-day workshop, we will take a less-is-more approach to create a painted background and a more-is-more approach to blend and layer fragments of paper and fabric. Substrate. Bring at least 3 sheets of heavyweight watercolor paper (140lb suggested). 11 x 15 inch sheets are preferred but anything 9 x 12 inches will work.
Words. We will be placing a single word our collage. Bring anything that you can use to create a word chosen within the class: pen/pencil, rubber stamp or stencil alphabet, rub-on, etc. You don’t need all of these – just bring your favorites.

Coiled wire and colorful beads are the basis of visually exciting jewelry and this workshop draws upon early 19th Century traditional African weaving techniques used by Zulu basket makers. We’ll create a pendant inspired by this art form during this all-day class, and you will also be introduced to dozens of ways to expand your jewelry wire weaving and wrapping repertoire.

Together, we’ll explore the use of various types and gauges of colorful wire, learn to work intuitively and to anticipate how an individual weave will progress as the piece is built. Some hands-on practice comes first, so you can learn different ways to wire wrap on an armature, join and combine wire types, create picots, beaded bridges, plus several other techniques using very simple hand tools and then, it’s on to the creation of your finished wearable art!
Skill level: Advanced beginner and up
A physical note: Some experience with metal wire wrapping and/or weaving would be helpful, and hand strength is a plus, as we will need to manipulate somewhat thick and hard wire for a period of time.

There are so many beautiful vintage linens and trims that lend themselves nicely to repurposing... Wedding gown lace and flour sacks, old silk ties and trims and crocheted doilies. As well, I find myself drawn to the old photos, whether they are descendants or complete strangers, all just frozen in time. Let’s make something beautiful and meaningful using paper bags, pretty paper, old pages, and other ephemera. I’ll show you how to sew some simple signatures using various plain, printed, and handmade papers, as well as paper lunch bags. I will have paper, waxed thread, bone folders, needles, and other tools available for students to use. We will attempt to sew 10 signatures and also make a decorative, collaged cover for our journal. Once assembled, we’ll use a fancy ribbon or strap system to keep our journal closed. This journal will have lots of pockets for your treasures. Encaustic painting (painting using hot beeswax wax and mixed with a little resin for durability) is an ancient medium that not only looks luminous and dreamy, but it smells nice too.
One easy way to add color is to use Pan Pastels. Pan Pastels are a cake type of pastel that you apply using an applicator. It feels so light and airy you would think you are working with dust from butterfly wings. It becomes rich as you build up color then fuse with the heat of a flambé torch. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun or flambe torch. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium.

This "heavy-metal" journal is reminiscent of those old time erector sets, and it is as durable as it looks. This thing will be around for years, and after you fill it with original artwork or writing, it is sure to become a fascinating conversation piece and heirloom. You will be building a large (6" x 8" x 2") all-metal journal with copper pipe hanging strap, a.k.a. "plumber's tape" and learning my unique "no-sew" wire binding. The covers, where dozens of holes alternate with altered hardware, create an magnificent effect. Both covers and spine of this book are completely fabricated "from scratch". Once you add some decorative chain and a few well-chosen beads and charms, or even bring a cool found object to attach to the cover, you make this book uniquely your own. Lots of useful techniques including cutting, bending, torching, and otherwise altering metal with chemical patinas and a torch, some basic bookbinding, and hand tool use and safety. This binding, once mastered, can be adapted all sorts of ways to make books in different sizes and other materials.

The brand is Crafter’s Collection and cost .49 each! Bring any colors you like. Create a beautiful, one of a kind, resin cuff bracelet. This workshop is offered in two parts. In part one you will fill a silicon mold with beautiful items such as pressed flowers, wood shavings, paper, glitter, etc. Then you will mix epoxy resin and fill the mold along with some earring mold as well. You can also mix mica powder or alcohol ink. Part 2 of the workshop will happen a day or two later to allow the resin to set up. You will return to class to remove the resin pieces from their molds and to finish them with sanding, polishing, and adding any necessary jewelry findings.

Of all the characters in The Wizard of Oz, Tin Man was always my favorite with his witch-hardened exterior so tragically emptied of his loving heart. Our attempt to represent this beloved character starts with a porcelain doll head and hands (your choice), then moves through a few handy doll construction techniques. Sprinkle in some fun tips for uniting very different materials into a uniform piece and add some painting processes that are almost alchemy, and you'll leave with a beautiful and well-built art doll honoring the tin man in all of us. Instruction includes altering the doll head with paints, two-part resin clay, metallic surfacing agents, and torching techniques. Then, construction of the “tin” parts of his body with copper sheet metal and copper pipe, then "weathering" him with chemical patinas and fire! As we travel our own "yellow brick road", we'll also try out some basic sheet metal fabrication techniques like rolling, punching, cutting, drilling, sanding, grinding, cold-connecting, and altering metal Black Sheep style! Hang on to your ruby slippers, Dorothy... we're definitely not in Kansas anymore!

Let’s relax and have a joyful day of stitching! This is a low-stress class in which I will guide you through color selection and easy stitches to make a lovely, tiny piece of art. Read the note in the supply list, please!

*Note* - This is not a freehand machine stitching class using a sewing machine. It is a day of relaxed slow stitching by hand. I will teach you all my tips and tricks to make adorable little art pieces that are very easy to travel with. I have made a ton of them on airplanes! I will have a bunch of the freehand characters available for purchase if you wish (optional). I also have an online class if you want to make the little characters yourself at home before this event. In this class we will create these unique pouches inspired by the Talisman pouches I bought in Morocco. They can be adorned as a neck piece or wall hanging. They include a special pouch we will make to put those special treasures.
I will show you how to construct the bag like the original. I will also show you how to sculpt a mini mask using paper clay. Other techniques to adorn the pouches will be demonstrated:
Embroidery, painting, distressing the fabric to age it, applying dark wax to the fabric to look like old, distressed leather.

Watercolor Paper (my favorite is the Fluid Watercolor Block by Easy Block. I prefer the Cold Press. I often use the 9 x 12” size and paint several pieces at once)

Step into a world of playful oddities with Pin Heads, quirky little characters born from vintage toy pins, flea market treasures, and a touch of creative magic. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll craft two one-of-a-kind Pin Heads, combining embedded eyes, oddball hats, and scavenged bits of wood, metal, and found objects. This class celebrates imperfection, imagination, and the joy of unexpected combinations. Each Pin Head becomes a whimsical experiment in color, texture, and sparkle—a tiny personality that’s equal parts strange, fun, and eye-catching. We will work with clay, wire and hardware to adorn our Pin Heads.

In this creative class we will be constructing a beautiful Steampunk themed clock. This is not your average clock. This clock will be a wall hung clock mechanical work of art with a swinging pendulum. Using my original laser cut gears we will each create an amazing timepiece that you will cherish. We will be embellishing our clocks with antique and vintage objects that I have collected for years. All materials will be provided. If you do want to bring some of your own small vintage items to include in embellishing your clock you are welcome to.
The finished clock will measure approximately 10" X 14".
