Collage Stories

Seth Apter
9:00 - 4:30
Saturday July 11
$185.00

My definition of collage is taking individual elements that were not meant to be together and joining them into a cohesive whole that tells a story. In this one-day workshop, we will take a less-is-more approach to create a painted background and a more-is-more approach to blend and layer fragments of paper and fabric. These elements will literally be tied together with hand stitching. An emphasis will be placed on developing an intuitive composition, creating texture within the layers, and leaning into our own personal styles and stories.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

Collage Material. This is how you make your projects truly unique. Focus on all-things paper & fabric and remember you do not need as much as you probably think you do. Anything goes but consider such things as watercolor paper, handmade paper, fabric, fibers, commercial decorated papers, vintage ephemera, vellum, tissue, washi, your own small drawings, vintage book pages, hand painted and/or gel plate papers, photographs, etc.

Substrate. Bring at least 3 sheets of heavyweight watercolor paper (140lb suggested). 11 x 15 inch sheets are preferred but anything 9 x 12 inches will work.

Words. We will be placing a single word our collage. Bring anything that you can use to create a word chosen within the class: pen/pencil, rubber stamp or stencil alphabet, rub-on, etc. You don’t need all of these – just bring your favorites.
