Textile Origami

Kristine Berg
6:00 - 10:00
Saturday Eve Sept 19
$150.00

This workshop places special emphasis on the history and possibilities of North American smocking. Traditionally used as a method of gathering fabric while allowing flexibility and movement, smocking becomes here a starting point for contemporary surface design, textile exploration, and garment innovation.

Participants first learn the fundamentals: grid-making, pattern interpretation, and the creation of a three-dimensional sample. Many students complete two different samples before exploring additional pattern options and choosing one to appliqué to a pre-made square  cushion cover , or create a soft round cushion.

No prior sewing experience is needed beyond the ability to thread a needle. This workshop is suitable for beginners as well as experienced makers who want to expand their textile vocabulary through a traditional technique.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

At least two 1 1/2 yard lengths of solid color medium weight fabric, preferably two different fibers. Linen, cotton, silk, wool, rayon, even polyester works well. Participants can bring additional pieces if they like, not smaller than 18”x18”.
Scissors
Sharp darning needle, or any sharp needle with an easy eye for re-threading.
Masking tape
One 12 oz bag of polyester, foam, or cotton stuffing.
