With the guidance of the instructor students will learn how to draw beautiful flowers using a scribble technique with both their dominant and non-dominant hand. This is a whimsical class, where we take away the structure and rules about drawing perfect flowers. Learning the art of letting go, flowing with your instinct and the gel pen, using the paper texture as a guide for your next move, we will create several pages of lovely flowers which we will fussy cut. An analysis of the initial scribbles versus what they look like after a period of time (several pages later) will be discussed, using the instructor’s papers and student papers to drive the discussion. Those who want to attempt an even less structured flower will use their non-dominant hand to create scribble art. No need to be afraid, we are all there to cheer you on! After deciding which hand we prefer the end result with, we will continue onto different types of papers and textures to learn how the end product differs depending on the medium used. After fussy cutting out flowers we will set them on black construction paper to see if we need to “neaten up or refine” any edges. Once we are satisfied with our art, the instructor will show students a variety of ways to use their beautiful creations: on a gift card, on wrapping paper, within a collage, on a bookmark, on a tea bag (tea bag art), staggered inside a frame along side other elements or by itself. This is one of those classes with no rules, where you attend to smile, have fun, and be amazed at the incredible results when you use scribbles to capture what is already in your imagination. You won’t want to stop!
Materials fee $5 payable to instructor at beginning of class includes:
Written Instruction of the process
One page of Watercolor Paper for each student
Copy paper - heavy weight
Small glass/vessel for water for the watercolors

Step into the wild, wonderful world of eco dyeing—where plants, pressure, and a little bit of heat combine to create unexpected beauty on fabric. In this playful and fast-paced two-day workshop, you’ll explore the art (and science!) of contact print dyeing—a process where leaves, flowers, rusty bits, and all sorts of curious materials leave their marks behind in surprising, often magical ways.
We’ll dive into the fundamentals: how to choose and prep fabric, use mordants, bundle botanicals, and coax out rich, organic patterns with steam and time. But don’t expect rigid rules—this class is all about experimentation, discovery, and embracing the glorious unpredictability of nature's palette.
Bring your curiosity and a few fabric pieces you'd love to transform—everything else, including an extensive array of plants, supplies, and equipment, will be ready and waiting for you. You'll be guided every step of the way with plenty of encouragement, creative mischief, and room to explore. You'll go home with a beautiful stash of one-of-a-kind fabrics—perfect for stitching, collaging, bookmaking, or just admiring!
With two full days together, you'll have the time and space to play, experiment, and let your creativity roam. This is also a perfect opportunity to engage in sustainable art-making—recycling and transforming textiles in a world where fabric waste is all too common.
No experience necessary. Just come ready to play, bundle, unwrap, and celebrate the happy accidents along the way.
Materials Fee $50 paid at beginning of class includes:
This fee includes everything you need to fully immerse yourself in the eco dyeing process—no scrambling for tools or materials. A great deal of care and effort has gone into sourcing, collecting, and preparing an abundant array of equipment and botanical materials to make your experience rich and seamless.
A satin silk scarf 8” x 54”
All equipment and tools for eco dyeing: steamers, burners, propane, dowels, buckets, drying racks, plastic
Plastic sheeting, spray bottles, and fabric marking tools
A generous selection of known printing plant material
Pre-dyed fabric blankets
Natural dyes
Mordants and vinegar
Recycled fabric
Nitrile gloves
Everything will be ready and waiting so you can focus on experimenting, creating, and having fun.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Smaller pieces of white or light-colored fabric no wider than 20”. I am a big proponent of recycled textiles! Silk, wool, and cotton are the “recommended” fabrics, but I have had some striking results with synthetic as well. Feel free to bring vintage lace, hankies, old rags, or even worn-out sheets—anything you’re curious to transform. This class is all about experimentation and seeing what surprises emerge!
I will be providing you with one silk scarf.
If you would like more: Dharma Trading Company is a good source for reasonable silk yardage and silk scarves. http://www.dharmatrading.com/fabric/silk/silk-fabrics.html
A pair of sharp scissors
A couple absorbent rags or paper towels for mopping up messes
This is a messy wet class so you may want an apron
I will be providing nitrile gloves but if you would like more coverage you may want a pair of longer dishwashing gloves
Several Ziploc bags 1 or 2 gallon size for transporting wet materials home
Optional:
Additional local plant material you would like to experiment with
A bundle of dried or fresh eucalyptus
“Special” rust objects (there will be lots of general rusty objects provided for class use)

Whether you’re a beginner or expert quilter, this class is perfect for you. I’ve taught this technique to over 600 students and they’ve all achieved a quilt to be proud of. You’ll work from your own photograph (or one you find online) of an old wooden building. An old barn works best. During this class you’ll learn how to make a pattern, transfer it to fabric, put together your building using multiple small pieces of fabric, and build your landscape. You’ll finish your project using free motion quilting. We’ll also discuss various ways to finish your quilt including a traditional quilt binding, a quilt facing and raw-edge bindings.
You can see examples of my work as well as student work at www.buttermilkroadarts.com.
You can contact me at buttermilkroadarts@gmail.com.
Materials fee of $30 paid to instructor at beginning of class includes:
base fabric, ruler, pencil, freezer paper, fabric marker for shading, tulle for shading, fusible web, black or brown fabric for the barn base, and a quilt sandwich for free-motion quilting practice.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
You will need a photograph of an old wooden barn or building as the focal point. Use your own photograph or find a picture of an old barn on-line. Take your photo (on your phone or a computer stick) to Fed Ex or UPS and have them make a BLACK AND WHITE copy on very THIN plain paper no larger than 18”x24”. Also make an 8”x10” color copy on regular copy paper for reference. These should cost less than $10.
Scissors small enough for precise fussy cutting
A white chalk marking pencil
An iron and ironing surface – a small travel iron and an ironing pad about 12”x12” is fine
A small light box (only if available)
Batting and backing fabric 4” larger than your enlarged photograph
Typical sewing supplies (scissors, seam ripper, etc.)
A small amount of fabric scraps for your building. For a brown barn, in addition to brown fabrics you’ll need greys, whites and tans. For a white barn you’ll need neutrals including whites, greys, tans and browns, and a red barn requires variations of red and grey fabrics. Batiks are great for this process because they don’t fray but any fabric can add interest. Small prints also work well. Rust colors are great for worn roofs.
A small variety of light and dark green fabrics for foliage and grass as well as small scraps of yellow and orange.
Neutral fabrics for stones, pathways, etc. (light browns and creams), brown fabric for tree trunks, and light blue fabric large enough for the sky. Muddled light blue fabrics or blue grunge fabrics work well. Don’t pick a blue fabric with clouds as it will read “cartoony.”
Threads to match your fabric colors plus pale blue, various greens, browns, greys etc. Variegated threads are wonderful for this technique. My favorite thread for grass is King Tut variegated thread #910 “Bullrushes.” A large variety of thread will add depth and dimension to your landscape.
Sewing machines will be supplied by Art and Soul Retreat.
DOs and DON’Ts for great results:
Don’t bring a photo of a stone or brick building – this isn’t what I’m teaching! This technique is for an old wooden building - preferably an old barn.
Don’t make the landscape the largest part of your photo. The focal point is your building. Crop your photo to enlarge the building before taking it to be enlarged if you need to.
Don’t bring a photo that has lots of water in the landscape. Water is hard to replicate in fabric. Learn the technique before you tackle adding water.
Do bring lots of fabric scraps to share.
Do have confidence that you can learn this technique and have a finished art quilt to enjoy.

Students will not only get a demonstration of these tools and several of their myriad uses on all kinds of materials, but should bring along a variety of supplies to practice on, as there will plenty of quality hands-on time for you and your new tool. With the guidance of the instructor students will take "scraps" of fabric, yarn, lace, seed beads, and mixed-media items, restructuring them creating beautiful, useful and adorning Boho beads. After assembling all our supplies we will create the “center” base of the bead. As a group, the instructor will walk you through each layer of the Boho bead discussing what is added next to the center core, why and how. Fabric, lace, yarn, wire, charms and beads will be carefully layered for effect to eventually create our eclectic Boho bead made from a variety of mixed media scraps and supplies. Additionally, the instructor will teach the group how to make spiral elements with wire. These beads are sturdy and can be used on: a keychain, on a book bag zipper pull, to adorn gifts, worn as a necklace, worn as earrings (smaller version), as curtain tieback dangles (larger version), to adorn a bookmark, or as holiday ornaments. The instructor will bring completed Boho beads in a variety of sizes which are color-related, theme-related and holiday-related we will admire together before we get started to help spark your creativity. This is a fun, whimsical class, full of laughter and wonder as the different elements from our scrap pile result in a functional work of art and beauty. No two beads will be alike which makes this project all the more delightful and fun!

An eco-friendly, accessible printmaking technique (a form of drypoint) that uses washed, cut-up juice, milk, or broth cartons as printing plates. The interior plastic/silver coated carton surface is scored, scratched, and sometimes peeled to create lines that trap ink, which is then wiped, inked, and passed through a press or rubbed by hand with a baren to produce detailed, textured prints. This versatile method of printmaking allows artists to create intricate, sustainable art without expensive or hazardous materials. You will create multiple prints using intaglio inks. Multiple colors can be used simultaneously creating one of a kind monoprints each time you ink the plate. You will leave with multiple one of a kind rustic prints, and your tetra pak plate made from recycled cartons.

shared consumable supplies such as the inks, papers for printing, scrim, gloves and paper towels, and your clean, flat carton.

The style of folk art painting is simple imagery with rustic lines, often telling a story of everyday life. In this class we will paint birds on leafy branches, crows are the specific starting bird, and if you’d like, you can embellish from there.
We will use acrylic paints, which dry quickly, and allow us to work on 2 paintings in this one day class.
One of the main techniques we will use is painting the background after the focal point is painted. This is a practice of letting go, allowing that parts of the painting may be painted over and has a loose lighthearted effect. I think it’s fantastic!
No experience is necessary. Your painting and drawing style will emerge throughout the class. Individuality is what makes each artist shine. We will use chalk as an outline so there is lots of time to practice/erase/fine tune your work.

This two-day workshop invites you to create a mixed media art journal by first gathering what will live inside it. Through intuitive exercises, paper, collage, and mark-making, you’ll create a collection of pages before assembling them into a hand-bound journal. Fabric may be incorporated in small, optional ways—such as tabs, spine details, or accents—but the focus is on paper, layering, and process. The approach is loose, exploratory, and pressure-free—allowing the work to unfold naturally without the need for perfection. All experience levels are welcome.
This workshop unfolds over two days as a process of gathering and then holding—creating pages first, and building the journal around them.
Day 1: Gathering — Creating Pages & Elements We begin by setting aside the idea of a finished journal and instead focus on creating a body of work. Through a series of gentle prompts and exercises, you’ll create a collection of pages using paper, collage, and mark-making. These pieces are not meant to be resolved or perfected—they are fragments, explorations, and moments of process. We’ll work loosely, allowing layering, texture, and instinct to guide decisions rather than planning or structure. You’ll also create a focal element for your journal cover, incorporating resin to add depth, protection, and a sense of permanence to a chosen piece. By the end of the day, you’ll have a collection of pages and elements ready to be gathered into a book.
Day 2: Holding — Building the Art Journal On the second day, we begin to bring everything together. You’ll continue developing your pages through layering and collage, allowing each page to evolve naturally without pressure to finish Once your pages feel ready (or ready enough), we’ll assemble the journal using a simple, flexible binding method. The book will take shape around the work you’ve created, rather than the other way around. Fabric can be incorporated in small, optional ways—such as tabs, spine details, or subtle accents—if it feels appropriate to your work. The focus is on creating a journal that feels tactile, personal, and alive. Some pages may remain unfinished. Others may shift over time. This journal is meant to be returned to, added to, and lived with. We don’t begin with the book— we begin with what wants to be inside it

Get ready to spill the Gelli beans—because this isn’t your usual printmaking class! The Gelli plate is bursting with creative potential, and in this two-day, hands-on workshop we’ll explore its quirks, surprises, and painterly magic from every angle. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned gel-printer, you’ll find fresh techniques, original ideas, and a renewed sense of creative play.
Day One: Building the Foundation
We’ll begin by building a rich collection of uniquely textured prints—lush, layered backgrounds that hum with color and complexity. You’ll explore unexpected texture techniques original to my process, painterly multilayered backgrounds, and printing with unusual textures. These prints will become the groundwork for the following day’s image-making explorations.
Day Two: Layer, Reveal, Transform
On day two, we’ll move from background to image, layering intention over spontaneity. You’ll learn photocopy image transfers using my proven step-by-step approach that takes this tricky process from frustration to exciting, beautiful results. We’ll build on that with image-based explorations that include reverse painting, pressure embossing, and the inventive use of drawing materials like pencils and pastels to create prints that feel alive—each one a conversation between chance and choice.
No drawing experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to explore. Along the way, I’ll share demonstrations, tips, and creative guidance to help you build confidence and find your unique rhythm.
Throughout both days, I’ll demo, guide, and cheer you on as you experiment. Even if you’ve been printing for years, I promise there will be techniques and approaches you haven’t tried—and they might just change the way you see your Gelli plate.

In this deeply nourishing mixed media class, you are invited to slow down, listen inward, and connect with the truth of who you are through the art of weaving.
Using a rich and tactile collection of original papers, fibres, wool, fabric, and gathered natural elements, you will create a one-of-a-kind woven piece that holds whispers of your inner truth and your soul’s expression.
You will explore the quiet truths of your soul as you create your own papers and alter fabric that will become part of the weaving. What wants to be expressed? What wants to be heard? Each layer of your mixed media weaving will become an expression of your inner soul so you may honor your true voice. You may find yourself releasing, remembering, or gently reconnecting with parts of yourself that have been waiting to be seen and held.
You will be gently guided with care and encouraged to trust your process and honour whatever unfolds.
Leave with a woven piece that holds your story…and the knowing that even the softest voice within you is worthy of being expressed.

This class begins with a face. We’ll start by creating the spirit of our figure—drawing, painting, or stitching a face that feels like someone waiting to be known. From there, we begin to build her form slowly, in layers… allowing the piece to grow in an intuitive and unfolding way. Fabric becomes our language. Through hand stitching, painted details, and fabric surface design techniques, we’ll create a series of connected sections—each one holding its own story, texture, and visual voice. These pieces extend downward, forming a long, rollable figure that can be wrapped, stored, and revisited over time. This is a piece that holds both the visible and the hidden. You may choose to include a private pocket, a symbolic element, or something quietly personal stitched within the layers. Each addition becomes part of her story—whether shared or kept just for you. Along the way, we’ll explore: 1 creating expressive faces using mixed media and/or stitch 2 building a soft, flexible structure that grows section by section 3 fabric surface design for personal imagery and pattern 4 hand stitching as both mark-making and connection 5 embracing intuition over perfection
Day 1
Creating the face and beginning the body. We’ll explore expressive features, begin layering fabric, and start building the first sections of the figure.
Day 2
Continuing the body, adding surface design, stitching, and assembling a longer, more developed roll-up figure. Time will be given to expand, refine, and add personal elements
A Note on Building Your Face
Take note of the sample face—it’s all about layers of interest. for my sample piece, the base began with an upcycled Vera Bradley bag, followed by a layer of gray felt. From there, smaller fabric pieces and stitched details were added to slowly build the face. Let your materials overlap, combine, and evolve—this is where the personality begins to emerge. You may also choose to include something personal—in this sample, the bow tie belongs to my senior dog, Kashie.

This is an open level class as there is plenty to be learned by someone who has never painted before or those who are full time artists and teachers. A mix of demonstration, lecture and hands on painting will introduce students to my ideas, techniques and the concepts that motivate my work.
In this mixed-media painting class you will learn to create paintings that emerge from an abstract base of markings, colors, line, and shape to form expressive and organic creations. Students will learn painting and mark making techniques that will encourage imagery and connection to their work. Through a series of painting exercises, you will explore and express your ideas by imagining what could be created from abstraction rather than confining your ideas to predetermined outcomes. Within the process we will create narrative dialogue by noting what we see and feel in our work . Through the practice of subtractive painting we will remove the parts that are no longer relevant or keep us trapped from progress. This teaches us choice and freedom to change direction in our work. We continually build layers within our paintings combining fragments of passed ideas with the new until we arrive at a feeling of completion . Through this engagement we learn to experiment, take risks, re associate our work from perspectives unconfined by our expectations. This allows us to see things clearly and move to a more expressed and personal engagement when painting. Using simple materials and techniques you will be free to express yourself within your paintings in new ways. finding yourself as a painter from the raw base of art, learning your personal likes dislikes. Connecting you to your practice and imagery from a position of experimentation and instinct. Teaching you to imagine the unimaginable.
For me painting is an experience in every way, i love the feeling of each
of my mediums and methods, drawing clenched fisted, wrong handed, without
looking, using my hand and palms to smear and mix acrylic paints, using
brushes, scrapers, oil crayons, and pastels in any way that comes to mind.
I'm always looking for a new technique to inspire me.. painting in many
reckless layers searching for a meaning in random intentions, then pulling
out the images i begin to see. This is what I will aim to instill in all
of you.. the excitement of the unexpected.. creating in ways that don't
seem logical. This is a key step towards understanding intuition

Experience the delight of a child as they mix primary colors, create symmetrical insect prints, a positive/negative space design, paint with hot wheels, printmaking with found objects, and bubble painting. This class would be great for children ages 8-12 and an adult. These exercises are some of my favorites as an educator and reinforce existing art skills and promote creative thinking. This is an opportunity for young and young at heart students to create together.

In this class you will make connections with the obvious and the unexpected. You will create a variety of pieces that will be sewn together to create a beautiful, organic wall hanging using fabric, fibres, paint, carved lino prints and natural elements. What kinds of connections can you make with your materials? How do they connect to your soul? To Mother Earth? What are the unexpected connections you’ve discovered in your journey through this project that may connect to your life’s journey? What are the metaphors that may arise as you create?
Through a series of open ended techniques, you will work at your own level to experiment and explore boundaries of your materials and how they can work and affect one another; you will create a variety of works that will be cut, torn, and stitched together as a unique wall collage.

With the guidance of the instructor students will take "scraps" of items to create beautifully adorned coffee-dyed deli bags. One of the bags will include a notebook insert. These bags can be used in a variety of gift-giving ways or framed. Lynn will walk you through the process of making the notebook insert including demonstration of a three-hole pamphlet stitch. This course focuses on recycling supplies: fabric, lace, tulle, yarn, string, buttons, photos, appliqués, paper, and rhinestones creating a beautiful, decorated bag. Although bags used in the class will be pre-coffee dyed for purposes of time and drying, the instructor will walk the group through the process and offer a demonstration of coffee-dying deli bags resulting in different effects. The art of collage onto the deli bags will be explored. The use of grids to create focal points on the bags will be discussed. The concept of layering to create depth will be demonstrated. Before the students get started, the instructor will hold a demonstration including fully decorating a bag from beginning to end. This education foundation will then be used by the students to decorate their own deli bags using items using the instructor-provided kits. Each student will be provided two kits resulting in two completely decorated bags, one including a notebook insert to match. The instructor will bring numerous completed deli bags including themed bags (Birthday, Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Wedding, etcetera) for discussion and inspiration. Examples of ways completed decorated deli bags could be used by students will be explored in a group discussion. The combinations are endless and you will never look at your craft scraps the same way again!

Create a small, hand-stitched fabric necklace layered with texture, story, and a touch of vintage metal.
This one-day class invites you to work intuitively with cloth, thread, and found elements to make a meaningful piece you can wear. We will create a hand-stitched fabric necklace that feels like a small story you can wear. Using layers of fabric—frayed edges, worn textures, and unexpected combinations—you’ll build a richly textured base through simple hand sewing. We’ll focus on working intuitively, allowing the materials to guide us rather than over-planning the outcome. Once your layered cloth foundation begins to take shape, you’ll add a focal point using a vintage or found metal piece, transforming your work into a one-of-a-kind adornment.
This class is about slowing down, noticing detail, and embracing imperfection. Each stitch, each layer, becomes part of the story. By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a finished necklace and a process you can return to again and again—creating small, meaningful pieces that feel both personal and timeless. Some stories are stitched, not spoken.
Teacher Will Provide:
1 Cording for necklace
2 Additional fabric scraps to share
Gentle Note You don’t need perfect materials. The most meaningful pieces often come from what’s worn, unexpected, or already loved
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
1 Small scraps of interesting fabric (upholstery, quilted, frayed, fringe, velvet). Bring extra to share for a community table.
2 Scissors
3 Hand sewing needles
4 Needle threader
5 Embroidery floss
6 Small found object for focal point (costume jewelry, old doll parts, vintage elements)
7 Fabric-Tac adhesive

Create a one-of-a-kind bunting that tells your story through texture, layers, and intention.
In this inspiring mixed media class, you’ll explore the art of combining fabric, paper, fibres, metal, and a varied collection of ephemera to craft a series of beautifully connected pieces that come together as a unique bunting. Each flag becomes a small canvas—an expression of memory, meaning, and creative freedom.
Through intuitive layering and playful experimentation, you’ll learn how to blend contrasting soft and structured materials, allowing contrast and harmony to emerge naturally. Frayed edges, original papers, and unique elements will be layered and adhered together through sewing, stitching, stapling and glueing, creating depth, movement, and a sense of soulful cohesion.
This process is an invitation to slow down, to honour the beauty in the pieces you create and gather, and to transform the ordinary into something deeply personal and meaningful.
Leave with a finished bunting, or hang the pieces separately in your space as a gentle reminder of your creativity, your story, and the beauty found in bringing it all together.
