Sashiko is an elegant method of Japanese Hand-Stitching. Komon are Japanese Clan Crests, similar to British Heraldic Insignia. Komon designs are applied to everyday articles – Kimono, Noren (ceremonial door curtains), banners… They are often circular or hexagonal in form and make great mug rugs. In this workshop, you will explore a variety of Komon motifs and choose one to apply to a piece of authentic Japanese Sashiko fabric. The stitched motif can be finished into a mug rug, or you can sew it as a patch onto another project. Sashiko is traditionally applied with white or cream thread to indigo fabric, but these days, anything goes. Students will have a choice of Sashiko fabric in several colors, along with a skein of authentic Sashiko thread in their chosen color. Skill level: Confident beginners and up. Note: All handwork, no sewing machine needed. 

Materials Fee $15 paid at beginning of class includes:

Authentic Sashiko fabric and thread,
backing fabric stabilizer,
needles,
patterns,
and use of instructor’s marking tools.

Supplies Needed  to bring for Class:

Small scissors or thread snips
A thimble (if you prefer to use one).
A small portable light table (if you have one – I will have a couple for students to share).
A portable light and magnifier (if you have one and it helps you see better for precise stitching.
