Step into an immersive journey with artist Crystal Marie, where sculptural forms emerge through paper, mixed media and encaustic. This workshop is an act of both intuition and discovery—shaping sculptural works with echoes of home.

Learn Crystal’s innovative techniques for transforming paper into vessels and sculptural forms, opening possibilities for creative exploration through the ancient Japanese art of hand-kneading paper, known as Momigami, in combination with contemporary mixed-media practices that include wire work, and encaustic wax.

With Crystal’s guidance, students will translate these concepts into free-standing sculptures, objects, and wall-mounted works, incorporating materials as varied as textiles, found objects, and more.

Most supplies are provided by the instructor, though students are encouraged to bring materials to personalize their designs.

Techniques covered:

creating traditional Momigami paste
hand kneading paper for sculptural works
Creating permanent armatures and nonpermanent supports
Incorporating found and natural objects into the design
proper attachment techniques between elements
developing experimental intuitive layers and surface details that make the entire work a tactile, visceral experience for artist and viewer!
Stitching and other details on sculptural paper
Options to finish the work with encaustic and without it.
