In the spirit of Pacita Abad we will combine fabric paint and stitching to create a colorful and original piece of wearable art. This is a fun and creative project that is suitable for students with any level of experience. We will use fabric paint ensuring that the fabric remains soft. We will then embellish the shirt with buttons, ribbons and simple embroidery stitches. Don’t like to sew? You can use a pen to make stitches.
Materials Fee $20 paid at beginning of class includes:
• Fabric paint and mediums
• Buttons, ribbons, embroidery floss, stick pins, needle
• Written instructions and color photos of samples
• Permanent marker and miscellaneous supplies.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
• Your own white or light-colored fabric item to paint on like a cotton t-shirt or blouse that is prewashed without fabric softener. The shirt doesn’t have to be new because the paint will cover any stains.
• Your usual painting supplies which should include at least 2 water containers, paper towels, a paint pallet, a fine mist spray bottle for water.
• Brushes: I prefer flat or angle white nylon brushes sizes ¾” or 1” and a liner brush. You may use the same brushes used for acrylics.
• A cardboard or plastic support for your shirt.
• Scissors
• A box of pop-up tissues is helpful (like an inexpensive brand of Kleenex from your hotel room)
• Pencil, ruler

We’ll begin by printing directly onto fabric using Gelli plates, layering color, pattern, and marks to create a surface full of history and movement. From there, the printed cloth becomes the foundation for a soft sculptural figure.
Hand stitching, fabric collage, and simple mark making will bring each figure to life—wonky, expressive, and entirely unique. These are not perfect dolls; they are character-filled beings shaped by process and intuition.
This class is welcoming to all levels and celebrates imperfection, texture, and personal voice.
What You’ll Learn:
• Printing layered designs on fabric using a Gelli plate
• Intuitive mark making with paint and simple tools
• Shaping printed cloth into a soft sculptural figure
• Hand stitching for structure, detail, and expression
• Creating faces and personality through texture and stitches
• Trusting the process and letting a piece unfold naturally
What You’ll Leave With:
• A one-of-a-kind fabric figure(s) made from your own printed cloth
• A deeper comfort with playful, intuitive making
• fresh ideas for combining printmaking, stitching, and mixed media
• A deeper comfort with imperfection and personality
• A piece that feels personal, expressive, and alive
This Class Is for You If…
• You enjoy experimenting with paint, fabric, and texture
• You like letting a piece evolve rather than planning every step
• You’re drawn to wonky, tender, expressive forms
• You’re curious about using Gelli printing in new ways
• You want a creative experience that feels gentle and encouraging
Materials Fee $20 paid at beginning of class includes:
table of goodness:
paints,
kecia’s artfoamie stamps to try,
butter cream paints and stencils by The Crafter’s Workshop,
Inktense blocks,
watercolor crayons,
embroidery floss and needles,
scrap felt for features,
fabric w/ lips and eyes, wood block stamps,
mark making tools…..
**If you’re feeling unsure—about sewing, printing, or whether you’re ‘doing it right’—please know that this class was designed with you in mind. There is no wrong way to work here. Every stitch, mark, and choice belongs. You’ll be gently guided, warmly supported, and encouraged to make something that feels true to you. No sewing skills required - there will be machines on hand to play on and of course, I will be there to show you the ropes.

- small paint brush
-hand-sewing needles & embroidery floss (I will be bringing some too)

Within the Layers is a two-day class focused on surface design and mixed media layering. Our time will be spent learning and using techniques related to collaging with paper and fabric, inking, painting, stamping, mark making, hand stitching, and book binding. We begin by building our surfaces with layers of collage, paint, and ink. Next step will be to add our own unique touch with mark making and stitching. In the end, this all comes together as we bind our papers into small booklets that hold and tell our stories. It will be a day packed with creativity, inspiration, and community. You will leave with 1 or more booklets that express your personal artist voice within the layers.

We will be making a fabric collage (approximately 12” x 16”) using a layering technique. I loved to gather images that don’t necessarily go together to create a story. We start out with a piece of fabric and start layering by adding collage and paint. The following layers are all about adding new layers but also revealing some of the layers underneath to get a glimpse of the history of the cloth. We will remove some of the layers by sanding to leave a ghost of an idea behind as we continue to layer with more fabric, collage and joint compound. The final layer we will stitch to create mark making and texture
Materials Fee $15 paid at beginning of class includes:
Vintage fabric scraps, joint compound
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Vintage linens (I will supply most in a kit but if you have some pieces, like old vintage tablecloths, runners or napkins, feel free to bring them)

Same pieces. Different hands. No right. No wrong. Let’s play.
Inspired by the anything-can-happen spirit of Lotería, everyone starts with the same collection of materials and one very peculiar rose with an eyeball at its center. You bring the wild card: a mug, jar, box or other small base that becomes the foundation for your creation.
I’ll show you a few simple assemblage techniques, then the game begins. Cut up your Lotería card. Keep it whole. Hide it. Layer it. Turn things upside down. Add something unexpected. There’s no pattern to follow and no finished piece to copy.
After a long retreat day, this class is about relaxing, playing and trusting your instincts while discovering just how differently a room full of artists can see the exact same materials.
And when you’re finished? Give your everlasting rose to someone special and tell them:
I See YOU! 🌹👁️

My definition of collage is taking individual elements that were not meant to be together and joining them into a cohesive whole that tells a story. In this one-day workshop, we will take a less-is-more approach to create a painted background and a more-is-more approach to blend and layer fragments of paper and fabric. These elements will literally be tied together with hand stitching. An emphasis will be placed on developing an intuitive composition, creating texture within the layers, and leaning into our own personal styles and stories.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Collage Material. This is how you make your projects truly unique. Focus on all-things paper & fabric and remember you do not need as much as you probably think you do. Anything goes but consider such things as watercolor paper, handmade paper, fabric, fibers, commercial decorated papers, vintage ephemera, vellum, tissue, washi, your own small drawings, vintage book pages, hand painted and/or gel plate papers, photographs, etc.
Substrate. Bring at least 3 sheets of heavyweight watercolor paper (140lb suggested). 11 x 15 inch sheets are preferred but anything 9 x 12 inches will work.
Words. We will be placing a single word our collage. Bring anything that you can use to create a word chosen within the class: pen/pencil, rubber stamp or stencil alphabet, rub-on, etc. You don’t need all of these – just bring your favorites.
Gel plate and brayer
Chip brushes for gluing
Fluid acrylic paints
Water container and craft mat/paint palette
Ink pads
Favorite mark makers (pencils, markers, gel pens, paint pens, crayons, etc.)
Collage Adhesive (I will demo using matte medium and glue sticks)
Craft sponges
Scissors and/or craft knife and cutting mat
Ruler
Needles and sewing thread for hand stitching
An assortment of your favorite rubber stamps and stencils

Curious about intuitive painting? Ready to loosen your grip on perfection and create from a place of feeling? Brave blooms is an invitation to step into a vibrant, supportive space where your creativity, identities, and stories are not only welcomed, but celebrated. Join us for a soulful day of paint and play as we explore bold, expressive florals through the lens of intuitive painting and abstract expression. Flowers, to me, are symbols of life itself. Beautiful, fleeting, and full of emotion. Through them, we’ll practice capturing not just what we see, but what we feel. This workshop is about immersion. Getting lost in color, movement, and mark-making until time fades and your inner voice leads the way. With gentle guidance and plenty of room for brave exploration, you’ll be encouraged to trust your instincts, take creative risks, and discover your own visual language.
What to Expect:

Stained Glass + Found-Object Heirloom Workshop
Sometimes the most meaningful things are the things left behind: an old photograph, Dad’s key, Grandma’s broken china, a necklace we no longer wear, mom’s handwriting on a scrap of paper, or some strange little object nobody else would understand.
These are our “ashes,” the fragments of stories, people and places that came before us. In this class, we give them another life.
Bring one special object or image and we’ll build an entirely original, freeform heirloom around it using stained glass, copper foiling techniques, ceramic, jewelry, chain and found treasures. Images and words can be captured beneath clear glass baubles, while unexpected objects become part of the structure itself.
You’ll learn glass cutting, copper foiling, soldering and patina, along with my architectural approach to balance, form, visual weight and strong construction.
There’s no measuring, no math, pattern and nothing to copy. We’ll let the history already hiding inside your objects help tell the story.
Because sometimes the most unexpected things can rise from the ashes. And become something worth passing on.
Each student can make one large piece or two smaller pieces! Metal Chain & Glass/Mirror suction cups included!

Batik is process of using watercolor and wax on Ginwashi rice paper. The transparency of the paper adds to the transparent watercolors adding an additional source of light. The process is time consuming but not difficult. All levels of painters will complete a successful painting. A line drawing is used so no drawing is required. Once you learn the batik process you will be able to adapt this process to your own designs. You will learn a trick which will make the batik process much less frustrating. Your choice of instructional packets for a variety of subjects will be available ranging from simple card fronts to a more sophisticated painting.
Materials Fee $25 cash paid at beginning of class includes:

This class begins with a face. We’ll start by creating the spirit of our figure—drawing, painting, or stitching a face that feels like someone waiting to be known. From there, we begin to build her form slowly, in layers… allowing the piece to grow in an intuitive and unfolding way. Fabric becomes our language. Through hand stitching, painted details, and fabric surface design techniques, we’ll create a series of connected sections—each one holding its own story, texture, and visual voice. These pieces extend downward, forming a long, rollable figure that can be wrapped, stored, and revisited over time. This is a piece that holds both the visible and the hidden. You may choose to include a private pocket, a symbolic element, or something quietly personal stitched within the layers. Each addition becomes part of her story—whether shared or kept just for you. Along the way, we’ll explore: 1 creating expressive faces using mixed media and/or stitch 2 building a soft, flexible structure that grows section by section 3 fabric surface design for personal imagery and pattern 4 hand stitching as both mark-making and connection 5 embracing intuition over perfection
Day 1
Creating the face and beginning the body. We’ll explore expressive features, begin layering fabric, and start building the first sections of the figure.
Day 2
Continuing the body, adding surface design, stitching, and assembling a longer, more developed roll-up figure. Time will be given to expand, refine, and add personal elements
A Note on Building Your Face
Take note of the sample face—it’s all about layers of interest. for my sample piece, the base began with an upcycled Vera Bradley bag, followed by a layer of gray felt. From there, smaller fabric pieces and stitched details were added to slowly build the face. Let your materials overlap, combine, and evolve—this is where the personality begins to emerge. You may also choose to include something personal—in this sample, the bow tie belongs to my senior dog, Kashie.

Curious about intuitive painting? Ready to loosen your grip on perfection, make a mess, and see what happens when you stop trying to get it “right”? This class is an invitation to spend a day exploring layers, color, movement, and the wonderfully unpredictable process of making abstract art. Join us for a playful day of painting and mixed media as we build richly layered abstract work through intuitive mark-making. We’ll scribble, scrape, draw, paint, cover things up, bring things back, make a few questionable decisions, and discover what happens when we let curiosity lead instead of a predetermined plan. This workshop is about immersion. Getting lost in color, movement, texture, and marks until time fades and your inner voice gets a little louder. With gentle guidance and plenty of room for experimentation, you’ll practice responding to what’s happening on the surface rather than trying to control where the painting is going. And yes, we’ll spend some time in that awkward middle when you’re fairly certain you’ve ruined everything. That’s often where the good stuff begins.
What to Expect:
Live painting demonstrations with step-by-step support
Techniques for expressive mark-making, layering, scraping, revealing, and creating texture
✏ Exploration of acrylic paint, drawing materials, mixed media, and unconventional tools
Color mixing guidance, plus tips on value, contrast, and composition
Strategies for moving through the dreaded “ugly middle” and knowing what your painting might need next
✨ Plenty of permission to experiment, take risks, change your mind, and push things too far
This is not a follow-along class where everyone leaves with the same painting. You won’t be asked to replicate my marks or make art that looks like mine. Instead, you’ll explore your own marks, preferences, impulses, and visual language.
Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or you’re an experienced artist looking to shake up your practice, Color Outside The Lines offers a space to play, experiment, trust yourself, and remember that you don’t need to know where you’re going before you begin.
There are no mistakes here. Just more layers. You are an artist. Come make your mark.

Every lady has a secret. This one is waiting to glow.
Begin with a forgotten doll head and spend the day transforming her into a luminous new character inspired by the timeless romance of Lady and the Tramp. Like Lady herself, she may begin as a proper little lady BUT with a little imagination, a few unexpected additions & adjustments, she’ll become something Bigger, Better, BADDER…..an Lady entirely unique.
Layer by layer, you’ll alter her surfaces, build rich texture, add found objects and unexpected treasures, then tuck a small light inside to awaken the mysterious figure taking shape.
What begins as discarded fragments become an illuminated assemblage—part sculpture, part nightlight, part curious relic from a story no one else knows. Perhaps she’s waiting for her Tramp. Perhaps she is one! Perhaps she’s wandered into a world of spaghetti, moonlight and unlikely friendships. Perhaps she has a completely different adventure in mind.
My architectural background & mastery of many different art mediums, helps you explore balance, proportion, visual weight and center of gravity. You’ll learn how to construct an assemblage that may look precarious, peculiar and wonderfully impossible, yet remains balanced, secure and built to last.
Vintage jewelry? Moss? Hardware? Clay? Stones? Chain? Something nobody can identify? Bring a few odd treasures of your own, and I’ll provide plenty more to tempt you.
There is no pattern, no prescribed personality and no finished example to copy. I’ll show you how I build mine, then we’ll follow the clues in your materials and discover who your laminated Lady will become. Don’t forget to turn off the lights!

Create a small, hand-stitched fabric necklace layered with texture, story, and a touch of vintage metal.
This one-day class invites you to work intuitively with cloth, thread, and found elements to make a meaningful piece you can wear. We will create a hand-stitched fabric necklace that feels like a small story you can wear. Using layers of fabric—frayed edges, worn textures, and unexpected combinations—you’ll build a richly textured base through simple hand sewing. We’ll focus on working intuitively, allowing the materials to guide us rather than over-planning the outcome. Once your layered cloth foundation begins to take shape, you’ll add a focal point using a vintage or found metal piece, transforming your work into a one-of-a-kind adornment.
This class is about slowing down, noticing detail, and embracing imperfection. Each stitch, each layer, becomes part of the story. By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a finished necklace and a process you can return to again and again—creating small, meaningful pieces that feel both personal and timeless. Some stories are stitched, not spoken.
Materials Fee $10 paid directly to instructor at beginning of class includes:
Cording for necklace
Additional fabric scraps to share
Gentle Note You don’t need perfect materials. The most meaningful pieces often come from what’s worn, unexpected, or already loved

Scissors
Hand sewing needles

With the guidance of the instructor students will take "scraps" of fabric, yarn, lace, seed beads, and mixed-media items, restructuring them creating beautiful, useful and adorning Boho beads. After assembling all our supplies we will create the “center” base of the bead. As a group, the instructor will walk you through each layer of the Boho bead discussing what is added next to the center core, why and how. Fabric, lace, yarn, wire, charms and beads will be carefully layered for effect to eventually create our eclectic Boho bead made from a variety of mixed media scraps and supplies. Additionally, the instructor will teach the group how to make spiral elements with wire. These beads are sturdy and can be used on: a keychain, on a book bag zipper pull, to adorn gifts, worn as a necklace, worn as earrings (smaller version), as curtain tieback dangles (larger version), to adorn a bookmark, or as holiday ornaments. The instructor will bring completed Boho beads in a variety of sizes which are color-related, theme-related and holiday-related we will admire together before we get started to help spark your creativity. This is a fun, whimsical class, full of laughter and wonder as the different elements from our scrap pile result in a functional work of art and beauty. This class is about exploring the self. YOU.
It’s about acceptance.
It’s about making your mark.
It’s about self-reflection.
It’s about growth.
Join me as we practice making autobiographical art. We’ll combine expressive painting and marking techniques with words and self-images and then create an artist book. We’ll explore the self, the good and the bad, and practice making our mark on the world. We’ll start telling our own story through images and powerful words. We’ll banish our self-critic as we value everything we are and everything we can become.
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
Your art journal
9x12 pad of watercolor paper, student grade.
Your favorite stabio all pencil, pens, pencils, crayons, charcoal, any way to make marks on pages.
Paint brushes
Rags, Paper towels & baby wipes
Acrylic paints in your favorite colors. Include white and black.
Gesso (white acrylic)
Gel medium
Scissors
Any images and ephemera that speak to you, including images that represent your favorite things and images you just like and that appeal to you.
6 to 8 photos of YOU (at any age, try bringing some childhood as well as current pictures). Please make sure you have at least 4 or 5 that are printed out on regular paper. Some techniques that we are doing will not work on photo paper. Make at least half of the photos large (the full size of the 8.5×11 paper) and they’ll be easier for you to work with. I find it easiest to use photos of myself where my mouth is closed (in other words, it can be hard to make teeth look good). I also find it easiest to use photos that are close-ups (i.e. you fill the whole frame and there is little background).
Instructor Will Provide

In this workshop, we’ll explore the alchemy of working with rust, alongside ink, paint, and graphite as both expression and inquiry. We’ll draw inspiration from master artists like Cy Twombly and Hannelore Barron and look to the visual poetry of written languages—from Chinese calligraphy to Hebrew and Greek scripts—to study how emotion, rhythm, and meaning live within a single line.
Through guided exercises, you’ll begin to develop your own visual language—a personal vocabulary of marks, symbols, and gestures that will evolve into powerful elements for collage and mixed media compositions. Demos will include the artist’s recipe and process for creating two different rust solutions to use as ink or dye.
If you’re ready to loosen up, experiment, and reconnect with your materials in a more intuitive way, this workshop is for you.

Encaustic painting (painting using hot beeswax wax and mixed with a little resin for durability) is an ancient medium that not only looks luminous and dreamy, but it smells nice too.
One easy way to add color is to use Pan Pastels. Pan Pastels are a cake type of pastel that you apply using an applicator. It feels so light and airy you would think you are working with dust from butterfly wings. It becomes rich as you build up color then fuse with the heat of a flambé torch. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun or flambe torch. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium.
Materials Fee $75 paid at beginning of class includes:
everything you need for this workshop!
For example, wood panels in various sizes, hog bristle brushes, materials to embed, papers to add, inks, oil sticks, scrappers, brushes, pan pastels and applicators, etc.
Many people decide to set up their own encaustic workshops at home after taking this class.

An Artist Book Workshop
Turn your tiny collections into a story you can hold.
Long before the sterile glass cases of modern museums, there were "Cabinets of Curiosities"—magical, private spaces where art, science, and myth collided in an attempt to categorize the universe.
Do you have a drawer filled with pressed flowers, vintage postcards, or weathered bits of nature? Don’t let your treasures stay hidden in boxes. Once again, Shwe Shwe plays a part in another of my Art & Soul Projects. Shwe Shwe, the much loved fabric in Southern Africa, was originally developed in Java and India. It travelled through European trade routes before getting to Africa and becoming the iconic symbol of Namibia (the then South West Africa). It was quickly accepted by the Herero women, and still today when you visit Southern Africa you will see Shwe Shwe used in clothing, handbags, shoes, hats, jewelry and so much more. Although this is a no sew project. there will be some hand stitching of embellishments ie: beads, fabric scraps, charms, and whatever you can think Of to attach to your howall.

Create fun masterpieces mashing together bits of collage pieces with painted images of people. This is a great way to bring together an image of grandma piloting a vintage rocket ship, for example. Or an image of dad as half a tree. Don’t worry the ideas come easily because you will be given a packet of mix and match collage images to use in your art. The fun is putting them together.
You will go home with 5” x 7” and 8" x10" completed works of art on canvas or boards.
You will be shown samples of what works. Demos on how to create paper, paint in the “paintover” style and, importantly, you will learn how to glue it all down for a professional look.
No painting experience needed!
Materials Fee $45 paid at beginning of class includes:
EVERYTHING you will need to take this class: paints, brushes, markers, scissors, glue, etc.. However, if you want to use your own family images, you will need to send the images and words to be printed to Lisa, 1 week before class begins so that she has time to size and copy and bring them to class
Supplies Needed to bring for Class:
apron
gloves
Optional: Feel free to bring your own brushes if you have favorites

The Art of the Upcycled Book
Give new life to the overlooked. In this hands-on workshop, we transform the mundane into the magnificent by looking past the "scrap" pile to find the hidden potential in tea boxes, old papers, and forgotten textiles. This class is about more than just traditional bookbinding; it’s about the art of paper alchemy. You will learn how to deconstruct everyday recyclables and reassemble them into a unique artist book. Throughout the process, you will prep your tea boxes and recycled materials, and create your own custom collage elements using expressive mark-making techniques with paint and drawing tools.
Once your book form is bound, you can continue layering with collage and adding embellishments at your own pace, incorporating ephemera from your personal stash to make the piece truly yours. My teaching philosophy is rooted in intuition rather than rigid planning; I prefer to let the materials themselves dictate the process. By embracing what you have on hand and allowing it to guide your hands, you will embark on an unexpected creative journey. You’ll leave this workshop with a finished artist book that tells a compelling story through its texture and form before you even add a single word to the page

Making artful faces can be fun and playful when we let go of trying to make a portrait. In this class, students will be guided step by step in various ways to lay down lines to create absurd and even distorted faces that contort and emerge in weird and wonderful ways. We will spend part of class practicing and exploring various types of face forms and imaginative elements. This is a class where happy mistakes can be especially happy as we bring to life weird and artful faces. Students will spend the second half of class creating an 11x14 expressive weirdo face on watercolor paper.
